ᐅSwami Vivekananda
Vivekananda also known as Swami Vivekananda, born Narendra Nath Datta,
was an Indian Hindu monk and chief disciple of the 19th-century saint
Ramakrishna. He was a key figure in the introduction of the Indian philosophies
of Vedanta and Yoga to the Western world and is credited with raising
interfaith awareness, bringing Hinduism to the status of a major world religion
during the late 19th century. He was a major force in the revival of Hinduism
in India, and contributed to the concept of nationalism in colonial India.
Vivekananda founded the Ramakrishna Math and the Ramakrishna Mission. He is
perhaps best known for his inspiring speech in which he introduced Hinduism at
the Parliament of the World's Religions in Chicago in 1893. Vivekananda
conducted hundreds of public and private lectures and classes, disseminating
tenets of Hindu philosophy in the United States, England and Europe. In India,
Vivekananda is regarded as a patriotic saint.
ᐅMaya Angelou
Maya Angelou born Marguerite Annie
Johnson was an African-American author, poet, dancer, actress and singer. She
published seven autobiographies, three books of essays, and several books of
poetry, and was credited with a list of plays, movies, and television shows
spanning over 50 years. She received dozens of awards and more than 50 honorary
degrees. Angelou is best known for her series of seven autobiographies, which
focus on her childhood and early adult experiences. The first, I Know Why the
Caged Bird Sings (1969), tells of her life up to the age of 17 and brought her
international recognition and acclaim.
ᐅShams al-Din Hafiz
Khwāja Shams-ud-Dīn Muhammad Hāfez-e
Shīrāzī known by his pen name Hāfez was a Persian poet. His collected works are
regarded as a pinnacle of Persian literature and are to be found in the homes
of most people in Iran, who learn his poems by heart and use them as proverbs
and sayings to this day. His life and poems have been the subject of much
analysis, commentary and interpretation, influencing post-fourteenth century
Persian writing more than any other author. Themes of his ghazals are the
beloved, faith, and exposing hypocrisy. His influence in the lives of Farsi
speakers can be found in "Hafez readings" (fāl-e hāfez) and the
frequent use of his poems in Persian traditional music, visual art, and Persian
calligraphy.
ᐅH L Mencken
Henry Louis "H. L." Mencken was an American journalist,
essayist, magazine editor, satirist, critic of American life and culture, and
scholar of American English. Known as the "Sage of Baltimore", he
is regarded as one of the most influential American writers and prose stylists
of the first half of the twentieth century. Many of his books remain in print.
